• After upgrading to 4.0 I can no longer set a featured image for a post. When I go to click on the thumbnail of the image to insert, it highlights, but I am not able to click “set featured image” and no info come up on the right portion of the screen. This is since the 4.0 update. I don’t have any admin themes installed.

    Hi lordofthecakes

Try the troubleshooting steps from the WordPress 4.0 Master List:

    • Flushing any caching plugins you might be running, as well as server and/or browser caches.
    • Deactivating all plugins (yes, all) to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s). If you can’t get into your admin dashboard, try resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin (read “How to deactivate all plugins when you can’t log in to wp-admin” if you need help). Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems. Also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder. The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old
    • Switching to the Twenty Fourteen theme to rule out any theme-specific problems. If you can’t log in to change themes, you can remove the theme folders via FTP so the only one is twentyfourteen. That will force your site to use it.
    • Manually upgrading. When all else fails, download a fresh copy of the latest.zip file of 4.0 (top right on this page) to your computer, and use that to copy up. You may need to delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folders on your server. Read the Manual Update directions first.

I’ve got the same problem, featured image doesn’t work any more ??

Me too, tried different themes too. It doesn’t specify the error, just tells me to “try again later” when I try to upload a featured image. When I just click “set featured image” the library box pops up and is stuck on the loading screen. I go into the media folder from the dashboard and everything is there, it just won’t connect to posts and pages.

This was happening right before I upgraded to 4.0, and I hoped that upgrading would help… but no change.

I even changed hosting companies (moved to Bluehost) and the problem persists. Wish I knew what was up!

WOW! It was a plugin! Widget Twitter VJCK version 2.0.1

Of course I have no idea how that connects to image functionality… but I’m glad it works again. So long 2 year old Twitter plugin!

I was having this issue and for me it was that a security setting I had in the .htaccess file wasn’t allowing access to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php. I removed that line and presto! It worked.

    Dear all,

Try downgrading jQuery from 1.11 (comes with WP 4.0) to an earlier version which your website used to work with.

In my case I had a WP site which after I downgraded jquery to 1.7 everything worked flawlessly.

This happens because some jQuery 1.7 functions are not in 1.11 and an error spawns thus ruining most of jQuery based operation in the backend!

    Hope this helps someone!
