• I just upgraded to 5.5.1 and now, when I tried to add a new user, there doesn’t seem to be any way to add a password for a new user? There is a button that says “Show Password” but there is to field to enter the password?

  • Hello,
When you click on the button “Show Password” it should appear a field with a password suggestion. You just need to change the suggestion to the new password and click “add new user”.
If the field is not appearing after clicking on “show password”:
1 – Logout from your WordPress dashboard
2 – Clean your browser data
3 – Login back and try again.
    I hope it helps ??

I also just updated to wp 5.5.1 and having the same problem: cannot add a new user because the “password” field is not working. It does not open a dialog box with a new generated password as it did in the past. I just deactivated all my plug-ins, the situation remains unchanged: cannot add new user because there is no way add password (auto-generated or manually)

correction and follow-up. I thought I had deactivated all plug-ins to troubleshoot– but i did not. The conflict was due to an out-of-date plug in: Import Eventbrite Event by Xylus Themes. The problem with creating new user/password was solved

    I am using WP 5.6.

Today, 4 Jan 2021, I attempted to add a new user via Users > Add New.

There is one field for password, which, upon opening the page appears to have a generated password in it, shown with *** . Clicking the Hide button does not reveal the password that was generated.

I entered a new password, but I get an error message indicating that I need to enter the password in both fields —

“Error: Passwords don’t match. Please enter the same password in both password fields.”

There is only one field, so I cannot re-enter the password.

I was able to create the new user account via the front-end, without errors.

The issue is only on the back end.

Could this be a bug in my version of WordPress?

    Your help is appreciated.

6 January 2021, also using 5.6, and having exactly the same problem as commontator

Having the same problem here. Time to downgrade for now…*ugh*

@cgooderham Looks like someone was having difficulty with WP 5.5.1 also, so if you are downgrading, you might consider going to something earlier.

I’d be interested in your results with this.

@commontater good to know… I had no issue with 5.5.3, prior to the decision to upgrade. Now I’m juggling whether I extend the time I deprive my user of access (in case a miracle fix happens this week) or go through the unwanted mind-numbing ten steps of downgrading. *sigh* … As I juggle parenthood, pandemic, and the schitt of this week’s internet challenges. LOL

Not a biggie either way… at least there is beer. Cheers!

I’m a newbie to www.ads-software.com Forums (and I’m not worthy). Is there supposed to be someone from WordPress following these problems in the forum and helping us or getting a fix in the works?
I’m also in over my head, aren’t the newer versions supposed to include improved security, so downgrading would effectively make our sites less secure?
I started down this rabbit hole because newly installed WordFence was giving me reports about all the hack attempts against some of our user logins. I don’t know which way is up.

I’m having the same thing as @commontater. It’s infuriating. I have to add about 10 new users a week on this website, and it does one or two and then autofills the password field as soon as I do Add user and I can’t stop it saying ‘passwords don’t match’, which as we know is a nonsense. Any workarounds apart from downgrading?

@jttennis and @grouse675 I don’t see any WP folks contributing to this discussion and it looks to be a common issue, as far as I can tell.

@cgooderham have you solved this via downgrading?

How do situations like this one get elevated to the WP team?

For a few days I have had a problem adding new users because “Resource Id nnnn” appears whenever I add a new user. Not sure if that error is from my child theme or some other plugin. This morning I installed WordFence and I started getting the same issue you are describing about mismatched passwords. When I deactivate WordFence, the mis-matched password problem goes away, but my strange “Resource Id nnnn” message is back. I recommend you try deactivating WordFence.

FYI my problems are related… If I deactivate my child theme the extraneous “Resource ID” message goes away (so it must be something in my functions.php code) AND when I reactivate WordFence I do NOT get the mismatched passwords error.

I just had someone contact me about this issue. In our case, it seems Chrome was (un)helpfully using the existing user’s password and filling it into the field there (as dots). Clicking ‘generate password’ was the simplest fix.

I am having same problem in safari and chrome. Both are trying to auto-enter a saved password (which is a bug with how the form is labeled anyway – it shouldn’t be trying to enter stored info there), but even generating password still leaves me stuck because there is only one field.
