I am working with The Professional (Child) Theme from Rohitink.com and I am unable to update WP from 3.9.2 to anything newer without crashing the site. The Developer states that the problem is with the EPanel that was installed. I am not the one who set up this site and I have no knowledge of what he is taking about. I really need help to solve this problem.

You should be able to do it with a manual update: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended

The process is actually simple, it’s just a very detailed guide.

    Thank you for your reply.

After working with the guide for a while and getting nowhere I decided to hire a professional to make the necessary changes since this website is the organizations flagship.

It took him an hour, basically following the guide but with some important side issues taken care of.

Update to WP 4.1: Disable all plugins and the custom theme.
    reset to a basic theme.

Preform WP update and then reactivate plugins and custom theme.

Update all plugins – this took some curious editing as several plugins had issues with WP 4.1

Up date the custom theme The Professional – Child and the ePanel via the Elegant Website theme updater. This also required some curious editing as the theme just did not want to update probably because it was an original theme over 5 years old and never updated that I could tell.

Finally back to the original website to reinstall several plugins which were not working properly and amazingly the site was completely working and operational.

I learned a lot about WP and some of the basics which I was unaware of. Altogether a profitable and positive experience.
