Now that TwentyTwenty has become the year’s new default, I have the following issues on several of my WordPress sites:

    1) I’m unable to update this theme: “Update Failed: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.” The permissions are set to 705 in every case, as they are on other sites where the update has worked correctly.

    2) I tried to delete and reinstall (via FTP) this theme on one of the sites, but it automatically reinstalled itself. In the process, I tried renaming a folder, so now I have a duplicate TwentyTwenty theme (and folder) named TwentyTwenty_.

    Can someone please help?

  • As @mgc helpfully mentioned, GoDaddy has introduced a user tool in Managed WordPress’ dashboard.

To get to the setting, click on “Managed WordPress” in the top menu bar after you’ve logged into your WordPress backend from GoDaddy.
    – Select “Hosting Dashboard”
    – Select “Tools”
    – In the “Troubleshooting” box, find “Reset File Permissions”
    – Select “Reset” after reading the details behind the “?” icon

That worked for me, and I was able to successfully update the Twenty Twenty theme. It’s possible others’ GoDaddy Hosting Dashboard or Managed WordPress setups may vary, of course. And any reset decision is up to the individual, though it worked well in my situation.

Thank you all for your friendly help and helpfulness to each other. This is a great forum and I appreciate all your input. Have a lovely holiday season!

Thank goodness for this forum. Also, this is second problem I’ve had with GD in two weeks, both of which I had to sort out on my own after GD proved unhelpful. Wondering if there’s a host with better customer service and more knowledgeable support who won’t try to push expensive and unnecessary “fixes” when simple and free one-click fixes (like with this, and my other issue) resolve it?

    Any and all recommendations appreciated.

I have the same issue. when I called managed support they had no idea what to say. These are the reasons I’m considering dumping goDaddy.

Just reset the permissions, as per fcatalano’s lovely, step-by-step messages above. It’s easy and seems to have worked for me and several others on this thread. Good luck!

For anyone that is having this issue and is not comfortable using the tool they added to their dashboard you can call GoDaddy and say this to them:

‘Hi, I need to have the permissions reset on the /wp-content/themes/twentytwenty directory. They are currently owned by a server user which does not allow me to modify them with my FTP/SFTP user. Please reset the directory and all the files it contains.’

They should be able to you help you with this. If they cannot then request to speak with someone else. This is a quite simple thing for them to correct on their end and I am surprised to hear that they have been unable to assist some of you.

I called GoDaddy and literally had to have second level support change the file permissions so I could remove their stupid free theme. The trouble is that I have several client sites on GoDaddy Managed Hosting. Apparently one has to call and ask this of GoDaddy for each site EVERY TIME WORDPRESS IS UPDATED!!! They are going to stuff every managed wordpress site with themes you probably don’t want and definitely can’t remove unless you call and get tier2 support. That is total BS. The support person suggested I switch my 20 clients to CPanel hosting and do WordPress updates myself because GoDaddy Managed Hosting crams the themes on you without an “opt out of free themes” option. I have a new sales pitch for GD “GoDaddy Managed Hosting, we manage to make your life less pleasurable.”

You don’t need to call them, there is a user-facing tool for you.

Please see this earlier reply for the steps: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/cant-update-or-delete-twentytwenty/page/2/#post-12238634

I have had this exact issue on several sites on Go Daddy managed hosting in the past week. Every time I’ve had to call support to reset permissions.

Now I’m having it on a site hosted on Media Temple – the same exact file permissions error – and it will not allow me to delete the Twenty Twenty theme via any method.

I really don’t like that this theme is apparently requesting extended file permissions, that seems like it opens every site up to vulnerabilities.

This theme should not be installed automatically on every single site, nor should it be impossible to remove! This is a VERY grave security concern.

    Hey @sssv,

The theme doesn’t contain any code that deals with file permissions or make any request for specific permissions of any kind.

The server is the one that sets the permissions of it. Those permissions are decided by the server managers based on their user configurations. Themes in the directory here are not allowed to do any filesystem changes whatsoever.

I’m happy to go through the theme code again with you if you would like but I reviewed all of the code in the theme several times while we were building it and can assure you there is no code that deals with permissions in it.

I suggest you speak to your host and ask why the updates are not working as expected on their system. If they inform you of a WordPress problem please report it on core.trac.www.ads-software.com, thanks!
