Now that TwentyTwenty has become the year’s new default, I have the following issues on several of my WordPress sites:

    1) I’m unable to update this theme: “Update Failed: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.” The permissions are set to 705 in every case, as they are on other sites where the update has worked correctly.

    2) I tried to delete and reinstall (via FTP) this theme on one of the sites, but it automatically reinstalled itself. In the process, I tried renaming a folder, so now I have a duplicate TwentyTwenty theme (and folder) named TwentyTwenty_.

    Can someone please help?

Now I’m having it on a site hosted on Media Temple

Media Temple is owned by GoDaddy, so it’s very likely you’re encountering the same problem because they share the same server configuration.

Edit: And since this reply started a third page, a quick reminder that the solution is available at https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/cant-update-or-delete-twentytwenty/page/2/#post-12238634

Confirmed with GoDaddy’s Pro Council that it is a permissions issue on their hosting.

Update from the WordPress crew: “this is a known issue for Twenty Twenty only; we started rolling out the fix yesterday with WP 5.3.2”.

The permissions reset in your link above @macmanx did work to resolve the issue, thanks!

I have exactly the same problem,
An my host provider doesn’t is Godaddy, I’m hosted with knownhost. I have deleted theme twenty-twenty (via Filzeilla and cPanel) and it reinstalls itself. I also reinstalled the theme and now I have it duplicated: twenty-twenty and twenty-twenty_OLD.

    PS
The twenty_twenty_OLD theme has three additional files to the original theme, and I think they have malicious code.

I suspect it’s the same permissions issue.

I recommend contacting your hosting provider’s support, and please feel free to refer them to this thread.
