Can’t Update or Install Themes and Plugins

  • Hi there!

    i just installed a wp, installation went well, but i can’t install or update any plugins or themes via Dashboard. i mean, if i copy plugin into wp-content folder, i can activate it from Dashboard. but, i can’t search & install from Dashboard itself.
    getting following error when i try to install a plugin:
    Installation Failed: The package could not be installed.

    also, when updating, i got this:
    Update Failed: The package could not be installed.

    can anyone help on this, will be much appreciated.

    am using php 5.5.6 if that matters.

    i couldn’t edit my post, so adding as a reply.

    when i tried to update Akismet plugin from Updates page (update-core.php) it returns following error.

    Downloading update from https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/akismet.3.3.1.zip…
Unpacking the update…
Installing the latest version…
Plugin update failed.
An error occurred while updating Akismet Anti-Spam: The package could not be installed. The package contains no files.
All updates have been completed.
