I am trying to update my MailChimp for WordPress plug-in to the latest 4.03 version but am not having success.

I click the Update button and the Plug-in states it is updating. The arrows spin for several minutes and then the update times out. Other plug-ins seem to update without issue.

I have deactivating the plug-in before I start the update but that did not have any effect.

I have updated this plug-in many times in the past without issue.

Admittedly, I am also having a problem updating WordPress to the latest 4.6 version. The site goes into maintenance mode and then the update freezes at various points in the upgrade process until it eventually times out. So, there may be something more serious going on but thought I would attack the plug-in issue first.

Would it make sense to delete the version 4.0 plug-in and install the latest version or will that break all of the connections I have with my Mailchimp account?

Anyone else having a problem with this upgrade? Any thoughts or suggestions on how to fix this issue?

    Thanks,

    David

I do not recommend deleting and than installing the newer version as the update takes care of some migrations that won’t happen if you go that route and you will possibly lose some settings.

Can you take a look at your Apache error log? I think the server is running out of memory or you need to set the time-out longer. The errors in your Apache log should give us more specific information.

Thanks for your response. Can you provide some guidance on where to look for the Apache log files? I’m not sure my hosting company gives me access to that part of the directory but I can look if you can point me in the right direction.

Maybe you have cPanel or Direct Admin access? Else you should really ask your hosting provider, it can be different for each provider how to access those logfiles.

Can you access your .htaccess in the root folder of your wordpress installation? You could just try setting a higher memory limit by adding the following line to your .htaccess

    php_value memory_limit 128M

That will set the limit at 128m, should be MORE then enough.
Please remove that line again after updating and/or if it doesn’t solve your problem.

Hope that helps. Let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks for your follow-up. I did look at my directory structure and see a folder called Logs and it has a lot of files in it but none that are labeled in a way that leads be to believe they are from the Apache server.

I tried to add the line to the .htaccess as you suggested but when I loaded it into the root of my Wordpree directory I could not launch my site and got this error message:

    Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I did change the name of the old file to .xxxhtaccess before I loaded the changed file. As soon as I removed the changed file and named the original file back to the proper name, I again got access to my site.

    Any other thoughts?

    Hi,

Maybe try to increase memory limit via WP-config.

Please ask your hosting provider about the Apache error log, that would hopefully make solving this problem a lot easier.

Thanks for the follow-up. I have been in touch with my hosting company support and they confirm there is a problem on the server but so far, haven’t been able to resolve it. I have asked about the Apache log files but haven’t gotten an answer about that either.

I’ll report back as soon as I hear more from them.

I follow-up with my hosting company again this morning as the problem persists. They claim they are still working on it.

Regarding the Apache logs, they pointed me to a folder in my WP-Contents director and said the Apache log is contained in it. I downloaded it from the server and looked through it but even I can tell this is not a server log file.

There is another folder called logs on the root level of my webspace and in there are a lot of different files, most labeled access.log.#.gz, some mail.log.#.gz and some traffic.db. Are any of these the ones you would need?

    Thanks,

    David

Those are not the log files we need.

I’m sorry I can’t really help you at this time without some support from your hosting provider. Let’s wait for them for now.
