• Greetings,

I’m stuck in downloading mode when I try to update to WordPress 3.8. Even before I tried updating to 3.8, I was unable to update to newer versions of Jetpack or WPGallery. For those, I get the following message:

“An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.”

Updates have never been a problem in the past. But a few weeks ago, I exceeded my server space with my host, which prevented me from uploading new blog posts. That’s since been rectified. But I’m wondering if this might this be some sort of remnant folder access problem with my host?

    Best,
    Bryan

    Try manual update procedure.
Try manually re-uploading all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first!
Always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case.

Many thanks, Tara. Okay, I’ll give this a try (gulp!). I’m wondering about my Jetpack subscribers. I gather all that data is in /wp-content/. But just double-checking.

If anyone’s still reading this post, I’m still trying to avoid a manual update to WordPress 3.8. My problem seems to be with plug-in updates. I’ve been unable to update Jetpack or NEXTGen Photo Gallery.

BUT, I’ve just updated another plug-in automatically. It worked just fine. All the other updates seem to hang in the downloading stage. I’ve deactivated all my plug-ins and tried updating Jetpack, NEXTGen and WordPress (to 3.8). Nothing.

Might there be any work-arounds left to try? Thanks.

    One other point …
During my update attempts, my blog sometimes doesn’t go into “maintenance mode.” Sometimes it does; sometimes it doesn’t.
