Hello, I have 2 websites. Neither of them has been able to update from Woo 7.5 to a newer version. I was hoping this would resolve itself in a few version updates, however, every update it’s a different directory error.

The current error, can’t create: public_html/(store)/wp-content/upgrade/woocommerce.7.7.0/woocommerce/src/Admin/API/Reports/Orders/Stats

I tried changing the file permissions to 755 on the wp directories, then the whole website folder, and then the public_html folder. I also tried disabling the plugin & clearing the cache. If I disable all plugins and try update I get:

    Could not create directory: public_html/(store)/wp-content/upgrade/woocommerce.7.8.2/woocommerce/packages/woocommerce-blocks/src/Utils

When I try update Jetpack, I get: Could not copy file. jetpack/images/generating-cash.svg

I also checked my server error log & there’s nothing that to report when I try updates. Nothing in the Woo status log either.

Usually by disabling all plugins, most updates & issues resolve but no luck. I’m really not sure why this is happening all the sudden. All other plugins update fine. Last resort I tried using a 3rd party rollback plugin to try update & that produced the same errors.

    Hi @artkarolina

The error messages you’re seeing suggest that there might be an issue with file permissions on your server. You mentioned that you’ve already tried changing the permissions to 755, which is usually correct for directories. However, it might be worth trying to set the permissions for files to 644, as this is the typical setting for files.

If that doesn’t work, there are a few other things we can try:

    • Check Disk Space: Ensure that your hosting account has enough disk space. Insufficient storage could prevent the plugin from updating.
    • Manual Update: If the automatic update isn’t working, you could try updating the plugin manually. To do this, you would download the latest version of WooCommerce from www.ads-software.com, extract the zip file, and use an FTP client to replace the ‘woocommerce’ directory in ‘wp-content/plugins’ with the new one.
    • Contact your Hosting Provider: Sometimes, these issues can be caused by server configurations that are out of our control. It might be worth contacting your hosting provider to see if they can help. They might be able to adjust the file permissions for you or identify any server settings causing the issue.
    • Check for Conflicts: Although you’ve already tried disabling all plugins, it might be worth checking for a theme conflict. You can do this by temporarily switching to the default Storefront theme, and then trying to update WooCommerce.
    • Enable Debugging: If you’re still having trouble, it might be useful to enable WordPress debugging. This will allow us to see any PHP errors that might be occurring during the update process.

I hope these suggestions help. If you’re still having issues after trying these steps, please can you share a copy of the following:

    • System Status Report: navigate to WooCommerce → Status. Select Get system report and then Copy for support.
    • Fatal Error log: Share a copy of any fatal error log found under WooCommerce → Status → Logs.

You could copy and paste your reply here or paste it via https://gist.github.com/ and send the link here. This will help us investigate further and provide you with a more accurate solution.

    Thanks!
