can't upload images/directory not writable

    please can some one advice me, am new to this. i try to upload images to my gallery after installing but i wasnt able to it. after uploading, it says 0 images uploaded.

    when i try to go manage gallery to create a gallery, after that i get this message
    Unable to create directory wp-content/gallery/porfolio!
    Directory wp-content/gallery/porfolio is not writeable !
    Unable to create directory wp-content/gallery/porfolio/thumbs !

    please can some1 advice, i am using the latest wordpress 3.7.1
