Hi there, my first post! Just spent the last 3 hours reading the forum rules, here’s hoping I don’t break too many……;-)

I have pasted the following line into Google, and can’t seem to find an answer to my problem:

‘Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2014/08. Is its parent directory writable by the server?’

Does anyone have any idea what this means and how to fix it? I have contacted my hosting company, but I’m hoping someone here might be able to help quicker. I am using Parallels Control Panel, or is this a WP problem?

    Many thanks,

    Sean.

  • Hey there,

You need to check the folder permissions for the uploads folder. You can read more about permissions here:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_File_Permissions

Your host should also be able to assist with this.

    Take care.

    Hi,

Thanks for that, my web host fixed it, while I was at my day job, and all went well for a while, until I got:

“Client browser does not accept the MIME type of the requested page.”

when I try log into my WP backend, I get to the WP log in box, but no further. Don’t suppose I can ask that right here instead of starting a new post? Searches didn’t offer anything helpful other than it might be a hosting problem, only I signed up with a budget company here in Belgium….their support hours are only 8am-6pm…cost only €3 for the whole 1st year…looks like you get what you pay for….

I did try clearing cookies and cache, on 2 different Macs, 1 Safari and the other Chrome, and that didn’t help, so I’m guessing it might be a hosting issue.

I should also add that the problem only affected me when I logged out and then tried to log in again, in the meantime my wife was able to continue using the backend, until she logged out, and couldn’t get back in.

Both problems mentioned in this thread are solved, thanks!

    That’s awesome.

They corrected the permissions for you? Or was it something else?

Glad to hear those other issues are sorted too ??

    Take care.

It was the permissions, but I would have liked to know how they did it, they must have forgotten to tell me after I asked them to, I want to learn this stuff. And the other problem fixed itself later last night, for a while error 406, then we are back in. Is possible for computers to fix themselves?……

Is possible for computers to fix themselves?……

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Generally no, they won’t fix themselves unless there is some other force. A 406 was probably fixed by your host if you didn’t do it, it relates to mod_sec. If you wish to read more about it then check here:

    https://www.tipsandtricks-hq.com/apache-mod-security-update-how-to-fix-error-406-or-not-acceptable-issue-259

You don’t need to do any of this if it’s fixed, I’m just showing you. ??

As for changing permissions, depends on the access you have. As it’s shared then it’s probably just FTP, the link I gave you before should help you understand:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_File_Permissions#Using_an_FTP_Client

    Take care.

    Hello,
when i am adding media (picture) to the post this error come to “Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2014/08. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”
    Please help to fix it!

    Here is the actual solution!

Go to SETTINGS, MEDIA and if you have the same issue as me under uploading files, SOMETHING, SOMEONE, an UPDATE OR ???? Had changed the default upload folder to something like this..

    /home5/something/something/uploads/sitename/2014/08/etc/etc

I then set upload folder to the default which is

    wp-content/uploads

    AND VOLIA! FIXED

As a cleanup I connected to server and deleted the folder referenced by

    /home5/something/something/uploads/sitename/2014/08/etc/etc
(Which was empty I might add)

    Hope this helps ??
