I just updated (as in 10 minutes ago) to the latest version of Post Expirator (2.3.0) and I got a error 500 on the web site. In the debug logs I get the message:

[16-Jul-2017 18:36:47 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home/web/user/www/docs/wp-content/plugins/post-expirator/post-expirator.php on line 813

Removing the directory for post-expirator from the plugins directory makes the problem go away.

    Did I booger something up?

    Thanks!!

  • I have same issue.

My WordPress-based web site is not functioning immediately after installing the latest Post-Expirator version. I installed a Post-Expirator version upgrade (Version 2.2.1) on July 15 without any problem. There was another Post-Expirator version upgrade today (Version 2.2.2). Immediately after updating to that version, I get the following error. I am currently using WordPress version 4.7.5.

Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home/eltownhall/public_html/wp-content/plugins/post-expirator/post-expirator.php on line 813

Sorry guys! Fixed up in 2.3.1. Cheers!

Nope, sorry Aaron – I get the same problem with 2.3.1

    Other line, though:

Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in C:\Users\jojo\Downloads\Ny hemsida\root\wp-content\plugins\post-expirator\post-expirator.php on line 822

After updating to 2.3.1, it fails with this message:

Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home/eltownhall/public_html/wp-content/plugins/post-expirator/post-expirator.php on line 822

Version 2.3.1 fixes the problem for me! Thx!!!

What version of PHP are y’all running? I bumped the rev to 2.3.1.1 in case you got it before that other line was patched.

Updating to Version 2.3.1.1 resolved the issue for my web site.

    Current PHP version: native (5.4)

That explains it .. the syntax I was using was not supported until php 5.5 (which I wasn’t aware of at the time).
