• Hi,

I’ve ran into a problem that I can’t figure out to find the solution. I need to update my theme and WordPress version to 4.6.1. , but when I try to do it with my Dashboard update options, there’s no “update” tab in my Dashboard, only a message saying “WordPress 4.6.1 is now available”. When I click on the link it takes me to a download page. . .then I’m faced with the decision to completely overwrite my existing website with new files? This is so confusing, plus trying with FTP I only get error messages of the transfers not uploading, like if it were jammed or something.
The subdomain I would like to update is this one. I’ve read about it a little bit and what I found says that I’m not the admin user, which is confusing, as you’ll see with this print screen.

Any help would be very much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

    Regards,

C’mon Steve, I said it since the very beginning

No, I don’t have multisite. You gotta tell me whether you can give help or not.

Manually update wordpress and see if that helps. https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update

Please don’t reply again, ever, you’re useless. I was clear when I stated I’m having all sorts of problems with FTP, you again recommended permissions and now you go back to the same option!?
Stop answering please, you’re driving me insane.

Please, I need someone with patience, expertise and good suggestions!!

So here’s the deal: FTP and updates are failing because you have incorrect permissions or ownership. The lack of an update button and other may or may not be related. Solve the permissions/ownership issue and update WP manually (if the button does not reappear).

You can denounce me as useless if it makes you feel better,

I was clear when I stated I’m having all sorts of problems with FTP

Then fix your FTP issues first. WordPress has nothing to do with your FTP or your host.

@rjpp Please be more civil towards people trying to help you. Else, nobody will try to help you. This is a volunteer forum, you’re not entitled to anything at all.

The Updates tab not appearing is the main symptom you’re describing here. That can happen when you’re not an Administrator (as you have mentioned), however it can also happen when a) the DISALLOW_FILE_MODS define is set in the wp-config.php file or b) if you’re on multisite, then you need to be a Super Administrator to update things.

Is either of these the case?

Also note that some “security” plugins will set DISALLOW_FILE_MODS themselves, as part of their security process. This may be a toggle-able option in those plugins, or you can simply disable that plugin.

Yet another possibility is that some “one-click installs” of WordPress come from third party installers. These may have been modified to disable automatic upgrades. This has happened with a couple of third party systems before, such as CPanel. We do not recommend using one-click install systems because of this.

In any case, Upgrading WordPress manually via FTP or SSH is a possibility, but whatever issues you’re having there, you’ll have to figure out.

The recommended file permissions for WordPress are 755 for directories and 644 for all files, however this varies from host to host depending on circumstances. More information on specific topics is here:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_File_Permissions#Permission_Scheme_for_WordPress

However, 555 is clearly too low. 644 is the minimum for any normal WordPress file, with the exception of the wp-config.php file, which in some cases could be set to as low as 444 or 440.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the heads up.
I’m afraid the DISALLOW_FILE_MODS is not set in the wp-config.php file and no, I don’t have multisite (not that I know of).
I am the Administrator, never did I state I wasn’t. Here’s a print scrn showing I do have the Administrator credentials.
See the above msg? Where it says WordPress 4.6.1? I’ll translate for you: “WordPress 4.6.1. is now available. Please notify the site administrator”

All I want to figure out is, since I’m the administrator and I’ve updated many times before through the update tab, why can’t I see it this time and why am I getting such msg?

Checked the permissions and they’re all 755, both directories and files. Unless there’s another box I should check through FTP, I think they should be fine, shouldn’t they?

Well, as I stated in my replies, there’s several possible reasons why the Updates tab is now missing. One of those is assuredly the answer. But, I can’t exactly tell you which one. I’m a programmer, not a magician.

So, here’s your options and solutions:
    – Somewhere in your files, DISALLOW_FILE_MODS is being set (unset it)
    – Maybe a security plugin is setting DISALLOW_FILE_MODS for you (disable that plugin)
    – You’re on multisite and not a Super-Admin (use a Super-Admin on the network screen)
    – You installed using a one-click installer that modified WordPress to disable the updates system (do a manual update via FTP or SSH).

One of those is the problem (and solution). You’re going to have to figure out which one. There’s not any other answers that you’re going to get, because it’s most definitely one of those.
