• Recent upgrade to 4.0 and I can’t view new pages created or see an old previous page created. Getting a error:

The system cannot find the file specified.Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)

When I create a new page, the permalink appears correctly. But when I click preview or view, WP truncates the permalink and changes to something that does not display and returns the above error.

I saved the permalinks settings and resaved all theme settings.

This is a major problem as I can not create any new pages. I don’t know what file holds the directory settings information for page URLs.

    All other navigation is working.

I am self hosted on windows server 2003 with IIS6. I have been running WordPress for three years on this server with no previous problems.

  • I’ve had this happen, problem was with the .htaccess file (Linux server), permalink changes hadn’t been saved to it.

You’re on a Windows server, so you’re using Web.config, right? Have you checked there?

(I don’t work with WordPress on Windows servers, sorry I can’t be of more help)

    Hi Laura,

I am not sure about web.config I just did a search of my wordpress installation and can’t find that file. Do you know where it is supposed to be?

I do have a wp_config that has all the database information in it.

Should there also be a web.config file?

Remember, the blogs post are appearing correctly. It is the pages that I am getting the 404 not found error.

Hmmm…there’s some info on IIS servers and permalinks here:
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Using_Permalinks

    Have you read this?

It sounds like the equivalent of the .htaccess issue on Linux servers, but might need someone with IIS knowledge here.

    Hi Laura,

Thanks for the link to thread on permalinks. You should note the pretty permalinks are working fine for the blog posts. It is the link to the pages that I am having the problem with. So I don’t have any evidence that this is a permalink problem by itself.

I am trying to learn what wp file contains the page link information. My theory is that this file was not updated or the settings were lost when I upgrade the installation to WP 4.0. So far I have not been able to learn how the page link information gets updated in the database.

You could try to manually re-update the WordPress installation, this will show you if a file was lost/damaged on upgrade.

Hi just a quick question can you see your pages in the back end and

if you do have pages in the backend can you then edit pages? if you can edit pages can you then navigate to them using view page button above the editor?

So what I am getting at is if you can navigate from back end to your pages
    its a navigation issue

other issues are plugin conflicts after update turn off plugins and try If that works turn plugins back on one by one

Hope this gives you something to try
    Regards
    clive

PS If pages are there and link is broken you will need to do a 301 redirect let me no and i will point you in right direction
