CaPa Protect plugin causeing site to run slow

I have a site that we had a developer make about a year ago. He is no longer with us and I am getting complaints about the site running extremly slow. So I loaded P3 plugin and it’s screaming that that the CaPa protect plugin is really slowing things down. How can I determine the ramifications of deactivating this plugin without crippling the site? Any help is greatly appreciated.
