I’m not a fan of captcha, as I often have a hard time reading them myself, and they won’t stop human spammers, but may discourage real users to give up rather than keep refreshing until they find a captcha they can actually read.

The sign-up forms are protected by a hidden spambot field. Humans won’t see this form field, but the spambots will. When the form is submitted, the plugin first checks if the hidden field was filled out, and then just discards the post if it was filled out.

That will stop the majority of spambots, and for our own school PTA site, we have not had any spam submissions at all this school year. Of course, it won’t stop human spammers, but neither will a captcha.

Also, if you want to make the sign-up sheets even more private and protect against human spammers, there is an option to require users to be logged in before they can view and sign up for any volunteer events. We keep the system open to the public on our school PTA site (even though all parents have a user account), and have not had any problems yet.
