• I’m using Boriel’s Catpcha! plugin,
    https://www.boriel.com/?page_id=17
and have been succesfully for months…

Suddenly (last couple of days) I’ve started receiving a load
of comment spam… Anybody else seen this?

Captcha! seems to be working (when I go to the site) but the spam is still getting through ??

  • Captcha is not a reliable method of preventing comment spam.
You are better off using Akismet, Bad behaviour and Spam Karma 2.

    https://www.protectwebform.com/plugin_wordpress
    works fine for me.

    No spam yet.

Captchas are generally a bad idea, they’re just an extra load of baggage when it comes to leaving a comment. Plus they’re not good for accessibility reasons.

Bad Behaviour and Spam Karma are much better because they do everything behind the scenes, the visitor doesn’t have to worry about anything. I use Akismet and it’s so effective, I have switched off the moderation queue. People are happier when they leave a comment and it shows up straight away ??

I’ve found Bad Behavior to be a real problem because it blocks many valid users. I finally stopped using it after getting more complaints than I had gotten spam before. Bad Behavior congratulates itself on doing so many kills but many were friendly fire. Bad Bad Behavior.

Challenge (math) works pretty well but chokes on decimals and spaces causing some users to get rejected.

did_you_pass_math seems to work fairly well and I’ve gotten no spam past it yet.

My site is quite popular and gets almost nil spam with Just Akismet; until recently anyway. A few started getting through using the Author_name field to punch in URLs, so I wrote a quick plugin to correct that. Hope this helps.

I’ve never had any problems with Bad Behavior. It also seems to be updated fairly regularly, so if you are seeing false positives, you might want to let the author know so he can help.

I will also add that if a website asked me to do a math problem to comment, then I would simply close the window instead of commenting, no matter how much I had to contribute or how relevant my comment might be. Same goes for captchas. I don’t do stupid human tricks.
