    hello Oliver,
am I right that the caption overlay on the featured image in the twentyseventeen got lost to the need of having to use a slider plugin like nivo et al. ?
    thanks in advance /malik

    Hello Malik,

Do you mean on the home page where the slider is placed or on all pages?

    hi Oliver,
exactly. but I’m not using a slider, just the featured image.
I am preparing a presentation for a client, I’m not the programmer (as you will know in the meantime ;), so I’m mostly on and about the frontpage. by chance I found the overlay on a featured image of a normal page. but, as you are asking, they are not shown on the frontpage.
is there a chance to get them to show up there, too, without using a slider?
one more question: is it possible to give the caption on the images a link function?
thanks, and have a good week /m

    Thanks Malik,

Please confirm if it is just the featured image of the home page the requires this feature or are you using the home page panels as well? (Are there several featured images on the home page?)

We’ll look at the link feature at the same time.

    Thank you,

    Oliver

    hello Oliver,
pls take a look at the screenshots. the frontpage consists of 6 panels (each having a featured image). that’s where the caption overlay doesn’t show.
when going to a single page (e.g. ‘contact’) it does show.
the idea now is to have the captions on each featured image of the frontpage (and having them clickable would be outstanding).
    thanks in advance /m

    OK, understood.

Please advise as to where you would like the link to go to when clicked on, the page for the featured image?

Or would you like this to be customised some how?

Like a “Custom Link” field in the Featured Image selector below “Title”, “Description” and “Caption” for the image?

    Thanks,

    Oliver

    thanks Oliver,
I think the link should go to what the featured image is featuring, the page or post where it comes from. That’s good for us. don’t know if for other developers working with the plugin, if you consider to make changes, it could also be useful to have the possibility to customize the link address (in the moment I wouldn’t know why though).

If the link on the caption of the featured image goes to the post or page that the featured image is from then surely a single post / page will just link to itself so this is a little confusing to me as it seems un-necessary?

Also on the front page panels, the content from the panel is the page content. So again, linking to that page will just show the same content?

    Please confirm.

    Thank you,

    Oliver

stopp the press… you are totally right! a custom link is needed because the panels’ content doesn’t necessarily (or probably rarely) connect with the chosen featured img (on the front page). so, thanks for checking!

OK, we will look into adding captions to the front page panel featured images first then we will look at adding custom links to the captions.

Will get back to you when we have news.

    Hi,

OK, so I’ve got some bad news.

The panel images on the home page are not able to have the caption option.

This is because they are displayed in a different way to the single posts / pages.

The images are background images of a div rather than using get_the_post_thumbnail() function to show an actual <img> element.

This means that the post_thumbnail_html filter cannot be used in this instance to inject the caption.

Furthermore, the caption cannot be superimposed over the image in the same way because it’s not an image, it’s a div with a fixed background (for the parallax effect).

Sorry if this isn’t what you wanted to hear.

You might be able to do what you want by using the Cover Block instead.

    hello Oliver,
    thanks for your efforts.
ok, it’s not going to make me sob. would it be possible though to have an invisible clickable layer over the image, lets say in a comfortable size placed in the middle of a 2000x1200px img? no matter if only on the frontpage or both, the page that contains the featured image?
    have a good weekend /malik

p.s. in the meantime i’ll be checking Cover Block

I really think the Cover block is going to do what you want here … so let me know if not and I’ll look into a separate option that injects a text layer over the panel featured image.
