Caption padding bug? What go on?

Even the brand new TwentyFourteen theme has this issue, though I now realise this is supposed to be a feature rather than a bug; its not good practice at all.

If we must work-around it, is there any way to fix it within the MCE editor as well? It’s the one and only outstanding problem I’ve got with my editor style…

since wp3.7, there is filter on the (additional) caption width;
from /wp-includes/media.php caption shortcode section:
$caption_width = apply_filters( 'img_caption_shortcode_width', $caption_width, $atts, $content );

that should help to remove the extra 10px from the front;
unfortunately, this does not seem to be applied to the editor codes, where there seems to be a fixed addition of 10px.

Well, according to the tracker this issue is closed/fixed .. however it looks more like its got worse in 3.9 to me, where before the editor was showing the extra 5px to each side of a captioned image, now there’s a 5px margin below it as well?

Certainly the inline width is still there adding the extra 10px of width, I can’t see where the extra 5px below an image is coming from at the mo.

I have looked for new 3.9 documentation on this but not found any.
