carousel with images linked to modal window

I’m trying to create a horizontal scrolling carousel of images, each of which will launch a modal window.

I’ve tried using Royal Slider for the carousel, and Ninja Popups for the modal windows, but can’t figure out how to launch the modal window from the slides. I’ve spent hours researching with no luck so far. I’m probably missing something obvious.

Any other combination of plugins is fine too. I’m not married to those two.

I’m sure someone out there has created something like this. Please do share oh wisdom holder. ??
