?cat=-1 Indexed Versions Of Homepage

  • I’m finding some strange query strings on my homepage are indexed in Google and causing duplicate content.

    Ideally, I’d like to remove all ?cat=* pages from the site and have then resolve to 404. Any thoughts on the best method to do so, .htaccess, WordPress modification, etc.?

  • the query string should be used when you have not clicked save for the Pretty Permalink (htaccess) setting.

    I did what you said, but again it indexed in Google.

    I got stuck with this issue on here too.

    I spent a crazy amount of time on support chats/calls about this “negative” category situation. Extensive talks with Yoast, Divi (my theme), Google Webmasters Forum, and then I hit a dead end here.

    I was told it wasn’t even a WordPress issue by an admin here, and they were actually offended by me. It was weird.

    I’m still holding out hope to find the right solution. I’ve had many suggestions…only to get suggestions against those suggestions.
