• Hello all

I installed wordpress as an auto-installation script from 34sp.com – I thought I’d get it running as I randomly “found” it as an option when all I really wanted was some cheap MySQL hosting. So I have no domain name. I am running under a free sub-domain.

I installed wordpress in a directory called /blog

I have created categories and can assign posts to categories, but when I click on on of the categories I always get a 404 page error.

The actual categories folder on the server is empty.

    Thanking you in anticipation

    E

    *bump*
Sorry to bump it…. no reply after 2 days, so thought I’d nudge it

Anybody got any ideas on this?

you are using SEO friendly links, after you changed the options in the admin panel under (options >> permalinks). Just my guess here, but did you forget to update your .htaccess file with the instructions on the bottom of the screen after you save the settings there?

    If you didn’t, that’s why it’s broken..

additionally, if you make your .htaccess file writable (login via FTP, CHMOD to 666), wordpress will automatically be able to update it for you.

    Ah. Thanks.
    I didn’t change that.
    For two reasons:
    1) It said optional
    2) I had no idea what it meant

In fact, now you’ve pointed out, I still cannot connect the two… so, now off to track down the .htaccess file, which hides a lot!

I can’t even see it via FTP, not that I am sure where to look. I can only see it from my userpanel, so off there to fiddle.

UPDATE: I don’t seem to have any .htaccess file, or don’t have rights to see it at all.

I even used the search function in my console to search for it having looked through everywhere manually. Nothing.

If anybody can give me a clue what to do/where it might be/why I can’t see it.

    Thanks
