• This is a custom theme made some time ago. It looks like WordPress changed something in the core on how categories are called that is breaking it. Switching to the default themes works but that is not practical for the live site.

Is there a guide somewhere we can go by for how to update it? We’ve successfully been able to make updates to the theme in the past. But all the information on Google is too out of date or basic. Resetting permalinks has been tried. PHP syntax checks say all is well. We need something to give us an idea what WordPress currently uses to call categories to compare too.

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you can install plugins, install “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/ On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

We have discovered it’s SOMETHING in the custom theme it doesn’t like. Switching to default themes works fine. Replacing the basic index.php of the latest default theme with the category.php that is already there loads a page but shows no posts.

So we know that it’s something in there. The odd thing is if we make a brand new category that works fine. However if we delete and try and recreate and old one it continues to have the same problem. (We find this particularly confusing. It would make more sense for none of the categories, not even new fresh ones to work.)

Is there some specific bit of code that might have changed regarding calling posts from a certain category? If we know what it should be we’ll know where to look. But the index files on the default themes don’t seem to call categories.

Switching to default themes works fine.

This suggests your CUSTOM theme to be the error.

Since you are using custom theme, you may have to go back to your developer team and ask them to make the necessary change(s) to the theme. We feel your developer team is best equipped to support their products.

Forum volunteers are not given access to custom/commercial products, so they would not know why it is not working properly.

Commercial products are not supported in these forums.
