I need some help please. I have installed the basic Woocommerce plug-in. I have a categorie called “Bob Ross UK Supplies and Materials” which has a Union Flag as its thumbnail.

Under that I have what I thought were 3 more categories, set up as sub-categories by the names of:

    q. Bob Ross UK Landscape Paints

    b. Bob Ross UK Base Coats and Gessos

    c. Bob Ross UK Brushes and Knives

Which have all have “Bob Ross UK Supplies and Materials” as the parent. all sub-categories have products in them.

I was under the impression that if I go to my shop (click the link I entered) I would see a Union Flag with the title “Bob Ross UK Supplies and Materials” which I have.

I thought though that if I clicked on that catgory then I would then see the icons for sub-categories a, b, and c. I would then click on a sub-category to see the products in that sub category. Unfortunately I don’t. What I get is a list of all my products for sale, it seems to miss out the sub-category stage.

Please advise as I am tearing what little hair I have left out over this.

    Kind regards

    Russell Collins

  • Hey, I wanted to see if I could help you here.

Have you set your categories to display Subcategories, rather than products? This can be found by navigating to:

    “Dashboard -> Appearance -> Customise -> WooCommerce-> Product Catalog -> Category Display”

You should change Category Display to feed your needs, i.e. “Show subcategories” will show ONLY subcategories in categories if they exist, or, “Show subcategories and products” will show both subcategories and any products in that category

    Documentation here

    Hope this helps! ??

Thank you but it isn’t working.

If you go to my website https://www.russellcollinsart.com, go down to the bottom left and click on PNP Shop you will see the following categories:
    1.”Bob Ross UK Supplies”,
2.”Bob Ross UK Brushes and Knives,
    3.”Bob Ross UK Landscape Paints”,
you won’t see 4.”Bob Ross UK Base Coats and Gessos”

Item 1. is supposed to be the main category and has NO PARENT and the Display Type is Subcategories
Item 2. has NO PARENT and the display type is Subcategories
Item 3. has NO PARENT and the display type is Subcategories

Item 4. “Bob Ross UK Base Coats and Gessos” puts item 1. “Bob Ross UK Supplies” as its PARENT and whether Item 4 is is set to “Subcategory”, “Product”, “Standard” or “Both” still does not appear as a subcategory of “Bob Ross UK Supplies”.

What I want to happen is that I click on “Bob Ross UK Supplies”, then I would see the subcategory “Bob Ross UK Base Coats and Gessos”, I would then expect to click on “Bob Ross UK Base Coats and Gessos” to get the list of the 8 individual products in the “Bob Ross UK Base Coats and Gessoes” subcategory.

What actually happens is that I click on “Bob Ross UK Supplies” and I get the list of the 8 individual products in the “Bob Ross UK Base Coats and Gessos” category. It is like the middle bit has been missed out.

Also, if you click on the Brushes and Knives category you get a message that says
This page isn’t workingwww.russellcollinsart.com redirected you too many times.
    Try clearing your cookies.
    ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS

this message occurs on any browser I use to view the web page. I have had this before and I need to delete the category and recreate it.

But, if you click on the Landscape Paints icon you see all the products in the subcategory.

I hope I have been clear on this and thank you for any advice you can give me.

    Kind regards

    Hi @russellcollinsart ,

    Thanks for reaching out!

I understand that you are experiencing issues with categories and subcategories on your site.

Please see the below steps (as an example) on how to add categories and subcategories to your site, and how to display them the way you are requesting:

    1. ENSURE SHOP PAGE SETTINGS ARE CONFIGURED CORRECTLY:
Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Product Catalog
Shop page display = Show categories
    Category display = Show subcategories

    2. CREATE PARENT CATEGORY:
Dashboard > Products > Categories > Add new category
    Name: Bob Ross UK Supplies
    Slug: bob-ross-uk-supplies
    Parent Category: none

    3. CREATE SUBCATEGORY: Add new category
Name: Bob Ross UK Base Coats and Gessos
    Slug: coats-and-gessos
Parent Category: Bob Ross UK Supplies

This should allow for the navigation of the categories and subcategories on your site to be correctly set up and work as you require.

Kindly note that the subcategories would require products linked to them, in order for this to display on the site the way you intend.

Please let me know if you are still having issues with this after following the above-suggested steps.

    Thanks!
