At the moment, the plugin is missing a very important feature and that is the ability to create subcategories.

An example is my use case, where I’m trying to create a small eLearning platform, that has 2 main categories:

    1. English
    2. French

Each category will have some subcategories with courses in the respective language.

A nice way to implement it would be like this: screenshot.

So when a teacher adds a course, he will have 2 fields: the option to select the Main Category and the Subcategory.
Note: when a Main Category is selected, then the subcategories can belong only to that main category.

Then when you use the Course Categories block and the category has subcategories in it, they will appear.

Also, a big problem related to Categories, is that ALL teachers are able to create them.
We should have an option in the settings to enable/disable this, as we might get bad teachers that create categories/subcategories with foul words, or with stuff that is unrelated to the entire platform.
Then if other teachers add courses in those bad categories, it all becomes a horror story…

I believe that this one should have the highest importance on your roadmap.

    Thanks!

    Hi @tanohex,

I do get your point and thanks for your feedback on this.
Masteriyo is in its early stages and suggestions like yours certainly help it to grow, so please keep on adding these suggestions like you have been. ??

Well, we certainly cannot work on all at the same time but we will certainly prioritize and work on it in our coming updates (or in some case in pro version). Thanks.

I agree that subcategories would be a very good option.

As far as category creation is concerned, however, I have some doubts. First of all, currently, teachers are provided with the opportunity to create a category that they think fits their course content best. It is true that some teachers might create unwanted categories, but then they can also select “foul” names for their courses! And their course content might include some unwanted elements. The web administrator simply removes this content then.

At the moment, at least in the free version, potential teachers need to be approved by the web administration. At that stage, these people can (and must) be asked to accept a “Terms and Conditions” document that clearly states what will happen if these rules are not abided by. Anyone who creates silly category or course names gets kicked out; in addition, I wonder how many such categories will be created anyway.

The web administrator already needs to check and approve/reject so many things and I do not think adding one more “approval” topic to this list is a good idea.

I think you must have misunderstood my second suggestion.

We should have an option in the settings to enable/disable this, as we might get bad teachers that create categories/subcategories with foul words, or with stuff that is unrelated to the entire platform.

    Like this:

Now let me rephrase: we need a toggle button to enable/disable the adding of categories for teachers.
Granular control over a piece of software never was and never will be a bad thing.

Many platforms (like mine), would like/need to have just some pre-defined categories where teachers can add courses.

    Have a good one!

@tanohex and @hakangur Like always thanks for your inputs.

Yes, every sites may have different requirement. While some sites may want to provide freedom in terms of creating categories and while others may want to predefine set of categories and limit instructors to only use from the available ones. So, in that sense adding this control option would be nice as to satisfy both needs.
We have added this to our work list and will be added in one of the updates (or in pro version).
    Thanks.

Also, subcategories support for courses is also added in our task list. Thanks.
