They are simply ordered by name, true. No direct way around it.
If you want it to have set to Alphabetical, I am not sure if there is any way to do what you want.

If you do want this changed, I think the best option is to use custom sorting. Disadvantage is that if a new category gets added, you easily forget to seort that one too.

How do you do custom sorting?

I would like everything alphabetical not sure why it’s grouping categories with sub categories first.

For every taxonomy, you can set what ordering should be used. Default is by ID. You can also use custom ordering, where it follows the list above. Or you can use alphabetical order.
I assume custom ordering is best for your case, you could try it.
You do understand you can drag and drop the categories, right?

I have been having trouble with this also. for the bulk of my post categories I want them to sort alphabetically automatically. I have three sub-categories that I want to sort manually. But it seems that when I select one of the the three sort options under ‘settings’ that new option applies to all post categories on the entire site.

Am I missing something or is there a way to apply these settings to ONLY the sub-category I am working on and not have the settings globally applied?

The option is really for the taxonomy, true.
I don’t have any plans to make this more complex, sorry. There is already too much spaghetti in here.

For the original poster. I will think about if there is something that can be done. But it needs a good idea.

Hi, if you are still interested, what theme are you using? I would like to be able to reproduce the problem you have.
