category-2 loops, drop 1st loop in next pages

I have my category page set up with 2 loops to show the first post with the full text, and then just titles after that (in the same category). I would like to modify it so that the first category listing page shows that way on the first page, but the previous ones have only the posts with titles, and not the most recent full text post. I’ve tried putting extra if statements in, counting the posts, etc, but haven’t even come close to solving the problem. Can anybody help?
