category and subcategory

hmm i am not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but we have a Dependant Taxonomy Dropdown snippet https://github.com/simpliko/wpadverts-snippets/tree/master/dependant-taxonomy-dropdown you can install it as explained here https://github.com/simpliko/wpadverts-snippets/tree/master/dependant-taxonomy-dropdown at the bottom of the page.

Once you do that, the user would need to select the first-level category first, only then a dropdown with the sub-categories will load, if the sub-category has its own sub-categories then they will load when second-level category is selected and so on.
