Category banners obscure graphics

On the second tier of blogs (below the lead post) on my site’s home page, gray banners containing the categories assigned to that post appear across the graphic, obscuring the graphic completely. It’s not very attractive and no matter what setting I play with, I can’t get the behavior to stop.

Any one know how to eliminate these banners?
