Category Front End Problem?

Can Somebody please help me i’ve recentley installed WordPress…
Basically when someone clicks a category on the sidebar it goes to an archive for that category, can’t i just have it go to a page listing the posts from that category or create my own frontend page for each category?

EDIT: i’ve currently overcome this by editing the file archive.php and deleting the text stating that the page is an archive, and also editing the page in general to my needs is this OK or should i be going about it in a different way?
