Category links not linking to correct page view

    This is my first theme build, and I think there’s some very fundamental thing about WordPress I’m not getting.

    When I’ve linked to a category in the past it’s taken readers to that category’s latest post. But now the links just wrap back around to my index.php. The links I’m talking about are in the header. What am I not getting? thanks!

    Permalinks are set to custom: /%category%/%post_id% and they work correctly. Example: https://verymintcomics.com/bonestopick/1375

    I have the WP_Query block working for the post navigation, but what I need is different. https://url.com/category should direct users to that category’s latest post automagically.
