Hello. Recently I ‘lost’ the category option in the right sidebar on the edit post page.

I have everything else – visibility, permalink and more but I recall that the next option after permalink used to be Category and tags.

I have searched the forum and elsewhere extensively but I cannot find an option for reinstating it.

    Thank you

Make sure that you’re actually working with a post. Those options won’t appear when working with pages.

If you are working with a post, would you please use https://snipboard.io/ to share a screenshot of the full editor showing the problem?

Hello. Thank you for your reply.

Here are two screenshots. The first shows what it looks like now. Categories and tags are missing:

And this is what is used to look like,, although it took some time to find one that still showed the two fields:

I don’t know if this is a problem with the theme or I have accidenlty moved the fields somewhere and cannot invoke them again.

    Thanks again,
    James

Hmm, yeah that is not great, and very confusing.

Ok, this problem may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins and switch to the default Twenty Twenty-One theme. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.

If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you while you’re still logged in without affecting normal visitors to your site.

Any luck after trying the troubleshooting steps?

    Hello. Thanks for the follow-up.

The troubleshooting steps were the first thing I tried and an extensive search online invariably presents the same options.

The problem is resolved occasionally and if not I am adding basic categories via the post screen.

    Moving on…

I never did solve the problem as to where ‘Categories’ went (and frustratingly, it shows up sometimes!) but I did find a solution that might be of interest should that happen to anyone else.

It is a plugin called Taxopress. https://taxopress.com/

TaxoPress allows you to create and manage Tags, Categories, and all your WordPress taxonomy terms. TaxoPress can help with all your WordPress content, from adding Tags and Categories to Pages, to managing WooCommerce Product Categories and bbPress Topic Tags.

It allows the user to click on list of suitable categories at the bottom of the editor page and also option to add new categories from a dropdown option on the right side.
