• firstly – this is probably the one feature I was waiting for the most.. so yay.
    However… here’s my question:
in regular posts I have the format
    /%category%/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/
which is great.. but I’d like the Category links at the side (and in general) to just be /%category%/ not /whatever/%category%/ which they are atm.
its a) counter-intuative for users, and b) screws up how I’d like to navigate my site.
I cant’ put a blank value in the box, because that defaults to “category” which sucks… any suggestions without getting down and dirty with mod_rewrite myself? It does seem like it should be possible, the current default behvaior seems broken to me..

  • Damn!!! Don?′t know what’s going on.

    1-changed the classes.php file.
    2-updated permalink structure
    structure this way: /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/

everything works fine the category doensn’t apear in my url’s
but when i click a post gives me a 404 error.

    somebody!!! please.

so you have all other archives, but no single entry for post?

if you are letting wordpress write your htaccess file, and you had other .htaccess settings before- delete your .htaccess file and go back into permalink settings and copy and paste it into new htaccess file.

i noticed mine was getting mad garbled and had to start fresh.

there’s a serious bug in writing the htaccess, apparently.

sorry, wait a second, why did you edit your classes file? that is for removing the word ‘category’ but you’re not using the category for your permalinks, are you?

    can you send a link?

    Thanks for reply neaelythere,

yes i’m using the category and i edit my classes file because i don?′t like to see the default category messing up my url’s.

    here’s is the link

    Done!!! Again,

I read more carefully this thread and put it to work fine for now.

I having a similar (same) problem, but the fix above doesn’t seem to work for me. I’m on the release version 1.5, and when I try a permalink structure such as:
    /%category%/%year%/%postname%/

It kind of works, but doesn’t add the category to the link. By that, I mean that the url written is:
    https://mysite//year/postname/

The category is missing. However, if you manually type in the category to the address bar it gets to the right page.

I’ve tried 1-4 from nealrythere above, but no luck, any ideas?

Are you going to write this up and add it to the Codex, oh please oh please oh please!!!

i would add it to codex, if it worked.

as far as i’m concerned the category tag is brokened. and this hack is broken. you have to manually update the .htaccess everytime you add in a new ‘page’. if you use that feature, this is a tragedy. oh, and sub-categories don’t work with this either.

but it is all written step-by-step here:
    https://www.aplus.co.yu/it/this-blog-runs-wp-15-now/

I stumbled across an almost-hack for this:

If you set your category base to /.. this removes ‘category’ from your urls fine, but only in FF, not in IE.

Thanks for this post, i was looking for the category hack and jsut implemented it now, its works beautifully.
