Category Selection type – Checkbox problem

When I check “Allow to choose category?” Category becomes a mandatory field for submitting a new post.
If I then select “Checkbox” for category selection type all the existing categories are displayed including one sub-category I have defined, but the check boxes do not respond. When you hover the mouse pointer over the categories the pointer changes to the selection pointer so the browser knows it is a selection area but the category check boxes do not respond to a mouse click.As the field is mandatory there is no way of a user submitting a post with these options selected.
Can anyone else replicate this problem or is it just me?
If it is repeatable, is there a fix?
If you need to see a sample of this problem I will have to set up a staging site because I cannot have this issue live on my site.
