Category Slug Can’t Be Updated

  • I only just noticed one of my categories has a typo.

    I have 7 posts within that category, and I can change the name but not the url.

    Anyone know why?

    Do I have to delete the category and add a new one?

  • Hi,

    Make sure that category slugs can not be the same as tag slugs in the wp-terms table. Now,, Click Tags tab in your wordpress admin panel -> search for the slug and delete it from the tags. Go back to categories and change the slug you should be fine.

    Thank you Shane, but I’m confused because, yes my main keyword is in both tags and categories, but so are many other keywords and they are fine!

    It’s not as if the whole url is the same because the two folders are:/tags/ and /cat/ so why am I forced to delete my main keyword from my tags?

    I guess I will have to delete the category and start again, but I’m still baffled.

    It probably has to do with the fact that categories and tags are stored in the same table (terms) in the database backend. Although there is another related table you can link to in order to differentiate them cleanly regardless of name, they must want them not overlapping to avoid confusion or issues in the source code.

    awesome! This was bugging me like crazy, kept deleting news-2 and it kept putting the 2 back on!
