Category Strip Removal Creates 301 Redirects Automatically?

    Hi,

    I want to remove the category strip using YOAST, however, I am not sure if old URLs i.e. domain.com/category/news would automatically use 301 redirects to domain.com/news/.

    I want to keep the link juice flowing to the new category URLs.

    Side issue: I have removed the strip and everything worked fine. I have re-added the strip via Yoast and now /category/news is redirecting to a random article, while category/blog works perfectly fine.

    How do I access /category/news now? Where can I delete that redirect? I disabled Yoast and the problem persists.

    We understand that when you switch from removing the category prefix to keeping them, a particular category redirects to a random post while others load fine. We find this strange.

    Can you please try?clearing your browser cache, cookies, and restarting your browser? It sounds intimidating but we’ve got some guides?here?to walk you through it.

    If the issue is still present after that, can you please try a different modern browser? That’ll help us rule in/out the browser as the culprit here.

    If this doesn’t work do let us know.

    I will do that.

    However the most important questions is: does removing the prefix automatically 301 redirect to old URL structure /category/whatever or not?

    How do I save all the backlinks linking to old URLs with category prefix?

    If you remove the category prefix using the Yoast SEO plugin, all the old category URLs that contain /category/ on them will automatically have the proper redirect in place. However, if you switch from the removing category option to keep category in the URL, there won’t be any automated 301 redirects for you.

    On the other hand, Yoast SEO has no option to keep the backlinks of existing URLs that you’re going to change. You can have the proper redirects in place to pass the link juice and search engines will eventually understand the replacement of the old links.

    So basically if I remove the prefix strip via YOAST I will get 301 automatically. For instance:

    category/news/ will 301 redirect to
    /new/

    while

    category/news/sample-post will 301 redirect to
    /news/sample-post

    Correct?
