    Hi,

Prevent Direct Access is causing issues with some images not loading on mobile devices since the most recent update.

After spending hours with different tech support, initially thinking it was Elementor, then Siteground, we have nailed it down to this plugin.

    prevent-direct-access/download.php

is leading to https://siliceoussolutions.com/pda_404/ and removing the redirect rules from the live site resolves the issue.

    How do I resolve this?

    Hi @airtasker6,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

It turns out that you’re embedding a protected image into your page, i.e. https://siliceoussolutions.com/library/_pda/2021/11/cropped-SILICEOUS-SOLUTIONS-Logo-Transparent-2-150×150.png.

By rights, only users who logged in with correct permissions can view your protected files, both via direct URLs and attachment pages.

In other words, it’s an expected behavior when non-logged-in users can’t see your embedded images.

Can you view the image when logging in as an admin user/file author, @airtasker6?

Which plugins or themes have you recently updated, by the way?

    Hi @buildwps,

    Thanks for your reply.

I am not sure it is entirely correct that it has to do with image linking to a pda link because the image is visible on a desktop browser even when I am not logged in. It is on mobile devices where the images are not visible. Additionally, it isn’t just the site logo. As you will see on the link attached in my first message, there is a banner at the top of the page which is visible on a desktop browser but not on mobile devices.

Also, I am not sure how it is possible that the site logo is displaying a pda image. The site was setup over a year ago and I’ve only recently installed the PDA plugin. Furthermore, the PDA plugin has been working without any issues for a couple of months now. Something is fishy somewhere or something corrupted somewhere (which I now can’t seem to fix) after updating the PDA plugin.

The only plugins I updated in the last couple of days is PDA, Elementor and Elementor Pro – and I have already liaised with Elementor’s support team. After consulting Siteground, they have stated it is an issue with the PDA plugin redirecting to some 404 error.

    Regards.

P.S. I should add that I created a staging site (staging6.siliceoussolutions.com) to test to see if any of the plugins was causing the issue. You will note that on the staging site, the issue doesn’t exist because Siteground blocks custom paths (like the one the PDA plugin uses) and the images are visible on mobile devices on the staging site.

I could just disable the plugin but that kind of defeats the purpose of wanting to have secure images on the website. I will have to use a different plugin if this can’t be resolved.

Just an update, the issue was resolved with the user via email.

As a reference for other users, our PDA plugins help you protect your files against unauthorized users.

    • PDA Lite version allows you to grant protected file access to admin users and/or file authors.
    • PDA Gold version enables you to grant all logged-in users and even custom roles access to your protected files.

Only users who log in with the correct permission, e.g. admin users, can view your protected files. Unauthorized users will be redirected to a 404 not found page by default.

To allow non-logged-in users to view your protected files while protecting their original file URLs, you’ll need our Referrals function.

    Hope it helps.

TLDR; the issue I raised in this ticket still exists and can be attributed to the plugin not playing nice with Siteground’s caching.

    __

    Clarification needed here.

All that was ascertained by the plugin author was that the plugin doesn’t work with the caching on our website (Siteground’s Optimizer in this case) and that all images, even though they are “protected” in the backend were still displaying on the frontend to logged-out users.

Attempts were made to have me upgrade to their paid plugin which doesn’t address the issues raised in this ticket.

All in all, it seemed like what the plugin author wanted to do in obtaining my email address and taking this conversation off this platform was to sell me their paid upgrade even though they do nothing to address the issues raised.
