Caution: Media Temple Does Not Support WordPress

  • I signed up with Media Temple based on www.ads-software.com’s recommendation (https://www.ads-software.com/hosting/). I purchased a Dedicated Virtual (dv) server and proceed to self install WordPress as I have with many other hosting providers.

    I encountered several problems and had to contact Media Temple support. Each time I was told that they do not support WordPress and that I was on my own. The support staff were friendly and did try to help by pointing me to some outdated knowledge base articles. Otherwise I was on my own for figuring out why WordPress behaved so differently on Media Temple than it has on any other provider I have worked with.

    I’ve dealt with at least five other hosting providers who have happily assisted with issues that impacted WordPress, if necessary, without a fuss. I am stunned that www.ads-software.com would officially recommend a hosting provider who officially backs away from supporting WordPress.

    Oh right, “some will donate a portion of your fee back.” It is a paid endorsement.

  • Thanks for the feedback on this. We actually support both platforms on our shared service and our VPS. When it comes to our VPS, though, we run into a lot of issues where we are dealing with custom configurations. Dealing with customer configs is a very trick thing, as you want to fix the issue but you don’t want to break anything at the same time. That is why we have our scope of support in place.

    For the most part, we’re pretty helpful with just about everything. Even though we help our customers on the (dv), our full scope of support for WordPress lies within our shared service. Hope that helps a bit, please let me know if you have any other questions.

    I understand issues involving supporting customer changes. And agree that the staff at Media Temple is helpful.

    However, I have had problems with the “out-of-the-box” server configuration that Media Temple provided. The latest problem is when the Plesk panel failed. I did not instal Plesk and I did not configure Plesk. Media Temple did.

    When something Media Temple created and sold fails it is disconcerting to be told “Please keep in mind that the (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Server is a self-managed server, and assistance with its configuration and maintenance is outside of the (mt) Media Temple scope of support. All suggestions in this message were provided as a courtesy.”

    It is very hard for me to self-manage the server when Media Temple built it and provides no documentation and only “courtesy.”

    If you get a self-managed server – from any web host, not only MT – that’s what you get: a self-managed server. If you don’t know server admin, get a managed server from a web host.

    You don’t understand that you’re confusing WordPress with the self-managed server (that you couldn’t manage). They’re completely different animals.

    Yes, I think you should get a total managed server then.

    Having worked with dozens and dozens of WordPress installations not sure that Media Temple would make my top 10 list for hosting WordPress.

    They don’t offer cPanel as a standard for one and as such make it hard to do even the basic things you need to do.

    There are tons of other hosting services out there that are more WordPress friendly. Just make sure they offer cPanel and you will be far ahead of the game. You do not need to be fighting your server. Spend that time on your site instead.
