• It’s not very often that I hand out four star or better ratings, but Cerber deserves it. The diagnostic information it provides is excellent and it, combined with a few of my own tricks, brought spam registrations on my site from dozens a day, to 0, all without having to resort to Google recaptcha.

The only downside is you have to be a little careful with some of the recommended settings, or you may end up locking out your own clients or friends. But overall this is one of the best security solutions I have ever used, in any computing or network context.

edit: After a month of using Cerber I have become more and more impressed with it. The final push to the five star rating was discovering that clicking on an ip provides detailed information on all the activity on your site originating with that ip as well as the whois data.

That makes instituting your own security measures, such as iptables blacklists, much easier. Truly impressive. Thank you again to the developers of this plugin for their hard work and attention to detail.

edit: Something else that really needs to be said. Being overwhelmed by spammers, scammers and hackers is a common reason for the destruction of small “hobby” or “mom and pop” online communities, where the admins and server ops often have busy lives and may or may not have much experience at web hosting.

Cerber deals effectively with 99% of that malicious traffic. I wouldn’t host a WordPress site now without it.
