• Hello everyone!

Please, i have been facing this problem since the latest update of WordPress 4.0.

About 4 pages of my website and one post are refusing to get updated or modified. Each time i try doing that, i get a 404 error. Replicating the pages did not help either and the new replicated pages are even crashing like the old ones with no turning point. Publishing new posts or pages are working perfectly without this error. The pages as well are refusing to get previewed or even saved as drafts. This is the most weird problem i ever had while using WordPress.

What I Have Tried So Far?

    1. I tried to update the permalinks – It did not help.
    2. I tried to return the permalinks to default but that did not help either.
    3. I tried to dis-activate all plugins and returning the theme to default – Again that did not solve the issue.
    4. I tried even to re-install WordPress, but sadly that did not help.
    5. I tried to make new pages exactly the same like the crashed ones but it did not help as well as the new pages are getting crashed as well by returning this 404 error when updating them. They are getting crashed at random places without any common pattern.
    6. I tried to repair the database tables using phpmyadmin and optimizing them hoping that would help, but again no positive results.

One more thing to mention is that all the pages of my website are getting rendered perfectly. I am just not able to update those specific 5 pages.

    Further Notes:

    1. My site uses SSL.
    2. This problem started also to appear after moving to a new web host.
    3. I am not using any CDN.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks

  • Hi,

Do you have a site link you can share? Having a link would be very helpful. I have a couple of possible ideas for your issue.

    1. Does your theme use any Custom Post Types or Custom Taxonomies? One 404 issue I know of is when Post Type names or Taxonomy names share the same name as pages. Due to the identical names/permalinks the 404s occur.

If you do not have Custom Post types, make sure to check out the names of your tags, uploaded media, and categories as well for identical names.

You said you set the permalinks back to default. Do you mean back to the page ID system (IE. sitename.com?p=123)? Those do not work?

    2. Do you have any rewrite rules or redirects set up?

    Thanks for your reply!

The problem actually is not appearing in the old web hosting. As for your suggestions, my theme does not use custom post types and i haven’t assigned any redirect rules. I have some rewrite rules to adjust my security settings but those are used in all of my sites. The fact that this problem is not appearing in the old hosting proves that those few rewrite rules that i have are not the issue. Besides that, i tried to disactivate all plugins and returning the theme to default but the problem persisted. I have tried to reset the .htaccess file to default as well but again no positive results.

I have been in touch with my hosting provider GoDaddy hoping they can find a way out but it seems that they gave up within the first 10 minutes asking me to go to www.ads-software.com so maybe i can find a solution there. I have been working with wordpress so long, and i don’t see any common sense in my problem. It’s like a miracle incredible bug!
