Certain products not displaying in filtered product results in backend

OK so I want to edit a group of products together, products with attribute set to a certain material in a certain category. So I have filtered my products list accordingly – BUT some products are missing from the list and I have to edit them individually. They are all in the correct category and have the correct attribute so why do 172 products work and 3 not?
From the customers point of view they show up fine when the same filter is run from the front end, they are the first 3 items on the results page!
