• I’ve made the 0.91 BETA release available:
    https://www.chait.net/index.php?p=147
It provides easy populating of a database full of your favorite Amazon products, and quick adding to your template for displaying recent and random items.
Supports pretty much any product listed on Amazon (at least first-party items — anything with an ASIN), in every catalog — games, toys, music, dvds, books, electronics, apparel, you name it!
Basic locale support, though I’ve only ever tested US (people wanting to try outside of US should talk to me).
    Any Qs, fire away!

Ummm, I doubt it it CG-Amazon all by itself, unless you have things that aren’t cached yet and Amazon is running slow.
My guess is you have a BUNCH of plugins and hacks on the site, and some of them are doing nasty things. Beel knows about this.. ??
Could you try turning off the Amazon stuff for a sec, and prove that there’s still load-time issues (I’m betting there will be). If so, start turning off plugins one by one until you find the major culprit.
Unfortunately, I’ve done my best to keep my DB lookups low, and use cache files to optimize things, but I can’t control everyone else… ??
Lemme know if you don’t find anything quickly.
I have a NEW version of CG-Amazon (a plugin) coming within the next day or two, plus fixes a LOT of minor and major issues.
    -d

Beel, no there are no files being cached in the cache_amazon directory. How do I make files cache there?
David, actually, I do have a lot of plugins. I will try your suggestion and also download the new version. Thanks!

Huh, this is weird….At home my page loads pretty quickly, and I have a 56k modem connection at home…So it looks like the problem is with my computer at work or the network connection (I guess). Thanx for your help! I’ll keep my eyes out for the new version!

Did you make the directory writeable?

    Thread Starter davidchait

    (@davidchait)

I should add a error output at some point if the cache file tried to write but was unable… hmmm.
Yeah, and the NEW plugin version of CG-Amazon will be even more of a pain, as the cache directory is down in the depths of the plugins directory, and ALL the folders going down need to be writeable. I wonder if there’s a way to automate that from PHP as part of the install process (and what the real/safe access rights are for linux/unix at least…)?
I could also put the cache folders BACK to being user created at the topmost directory of WP, so that there’s only one folder to change (well, one for CG-Amazon, one for CG-Feedread…). How about that? Might be simpler for novice users. Hmmm. Or have the script create the folders. Hmmm. Beel, any thoughts?
    -d

For the most part I don’t care where the cache folders are or if I have to create them, as long as placement is consistent between the two, but you might. Best to make it as idjit proof as possible so you can spend less time answering the repetitive “where what why” questions from the many posters who suffer from searchaphobia ??

    (@davidchait)

    Heh…
Yeah, I’m going to look and see if the server can create the folders and set perms and stuff… otherwise may relocate back to base level.
BTW, some serious changes, EVERYONE will want to upgrade. Bots were doing nasty stuff, I had 300+MB of cached amazon data, didn’t even know it. ??
Not to mention all the new features. ??

    (should be out tomorrow, btw)

Thanks for the explanation. I was shocked at the number of files in my cache a couple of days ago. I deleted everything and tried to see what I could generate clicking around a bit and couldn’t figure it out. I thought perhaps with each update of CG-Amazon the cache was somehow “forgotten” and new files were cached. I was going to tell you about it if I could recreate it, but bots never crossed my mind. That might help explain why asin cached files totally unrelated to what I have added show up, like “The Matrix” and “Lord of the Rings” – long way away from Akira Kurosawa and Gregory Peck movies!

So, rather than rewrite all the notes here, check out my big post at https://www.ads-software.com/support/10/8615, which explains my mega-archive I released that includes a revised CG-Amazon version.
All heavy users should really grab the beta and try it out, as it fixes numerous issues with bots, Amazon inaccessibility (and how to handle it…), new keyword search function, find-by-keyword in the admin panel, etc.
And since all the CG libraries now have ‘plugin-stubs’, they can be activated through the Plugin panel rather than modding my-hacks or index.

Just wanted to let people know that the CG-PowerPack is now up to 1.0b7, and has a number of great enhancements to the CG-Amazon system. The latest update fixed some issues with adding new items to the database, and significantly improves on the new Admin panel search functionality. I just batch-added 15 items to my database, with minimal effort. Just awesome!

Finally updated and things went well. Unrelated to this past update, check out the Spinsanity feed in my menu. I noticed for a few days it seems to be displaying just the feed description and not the items themselves…

That was me, too tired to log in I guess.

I’ll check your site in a bit, and then test it on my test site. Maybe they changed format or something.

    awesome plugin!
i finally dove in to it, and i cant get my wishlist to work.
i changed my ID name to my email in the cga-config.php but on my site i just get:
    “Empty wishlist given.”
anyone else have that problem? or what to do to fix it?
    thanks,
    mat
