Change first menu dropdown background colour

I’m using a child of the Twenty Twelve theme. On my menu/nav bar, both the immediate dropdown menu and the second dropdown have grey backgrounds. I want to change the colour of the first (e.g. first in the menu hierarchy) menu’s background, how would I do this?
