change from sub to root

I’ve been running my blog in a subdirectory /blog/ but I’ve decided I’d like to change my static site to run with WP. Can I simply change the blog URL in settings to the root directory or do I need to move the whole thing?

Are there any changes I need to make to make sure previous posts and pages can be accessed?
