Change in IP address throws off old installation…

    Dear WP Colleagues:

    I have to switch from a shared IP address to a Dedicated IP address, and to my surprize this destabilizes the installed wordpress (with O-Box PRESS template).

    It still finds the site, but it does not find the .css anymore, so the contents is rendered unformatted. In the source code, all links to CSS etc are absolute (https:// etc), not relative ( ../blafolder/).

    Any idea why this happens?

    I have switched the server back to a shared IP address and instantly everything is back to normal 100% fine. Switch it back to Dedicated IP and all falls apart. The Name Server requirements for both shared and dedicated IP are identical, so at my Registrar nothing changes. Same name server settings for both.

  • What urls are entered in Settings->General? Have you tried switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

    I figured it out. This morning it suddenly dawned on me that the IP change had the following initial effect:

    I first changed the IP address of the web site’s server.
    Next (within minutes), I changed the A-records in the Registrar settings for the domain name.
    Next, within minutes those changes were already reflected by (a) my own route to my web site (from BC Canada to Kentucky-based host and all the name servers between us) and (b) by the DNS Trace web site’s route to my web site (from wherever they are to Kentucky).

    BUT… My wordpress settings use absolute links. And those links (from Kentucky to Kentucky) apparently addressed name servers that had not yet received the new IP settings. So the site itself showed up, but the absolute link references CSS and images did not.

    Makes total sense. I just had to wait a little longer. All of the above took place in less than 15 minutes.
