Change navigation bar text color

Hello all, I added this line of code to add a colored background to my navigation bar.
Unfortunately, this made the nav bar menu unreadable because the text is the same color.

.navbar-default {
background-color: whitesmoke !important;
}

I need to add another custom code for the navbar text to appear (preferably black). Thanks in advance for any help.
