• Hello! Hopefully this question gets to the right place–I am having a devil of a time finding a related topic that gets me to the correct WordPress Support page where I can post a question.

Some background: I am almost done building my site (pre-launch “Coming Soon” status), and would like to change my site URL.

Problem (WHY): my site address is too long (or at least I think it is). mindfuleatingandlivingwithlinda.com. I checked Bluehost and the site name mindfullivingeating.com is available. I thought it would be best to change my long Site URL to this shorter 3-word version, but I’m SO scared it will mess up my entire site.

It looks like the solution is to simply go to Settings > General in my Dashboard to change my Site URL address and WordPress address to this shorter version. However, from what I read in other forums I’ve googled, doing this can bring an onslaught of new problems to my site (URL will break, I would have to move site files, change phpadmin code, etc.) and require professional assistance that I cannot afford right now.

Is there a simple way to change my site URL (the public one people use to get to my site) without having to do a lot of work to move files and reconfigure my php and database settings?

Also–which address would I use when signing up for tools like Google Adsense, my site URL or WordPress address?

Any help/advice is so much appreciated! Thank you!:-)

There are two ways to handle this:

    1. Buy the new domain and use it to redirect all traffic to the old one. So, if I got to https://shorterversion I wind up a https://longerversion. This can be done through your domain management options. (Check with BH tech support for the specifics on how to set it up.)

    2. Switch to the new version. Make sure you’ve bought the domain and that it points to your current BH hosting. Use the plugin “better search replace” to search (in all tables) for https://longversion and replace with https://shortversion. If you want to continue to use the old domain, too, do the same thing as outlined in number 1, above.

Thank you so much, Steven! I will work with Bluehost support to guide me with set up. I’m hoping they will negotiate with me to leverage the price of buying a new domain, since I am still paying for the old one. Kicking myself for not recognizing this when I first set up the site!

    Anyone else have recommendations /solutions?
