change the background color of widget area

I have searched and tried several different solutions but nothing seems to work.
I want to change the color of the background for my sidebar in the twenty ten theme. I have tried using the add CSS but it does not seem to work. any help greatly appreciated.
I had it before but my site took a dump and the restore did not work so I am starting from scratch.
