Change the date format

One thing I have the sudden urge to do that I fogot how is to change the format of the date. Right now the date on is formatted as “1/28/2004” (w/o the quotes of course) and in the WordPress options the syntax right now is “n/j/Y”. What syntax would I put in to have the date formatted as “Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004” or “Wednesday, 1/28/2004” as an example.
I feel like such a rookie for having to ask this but I simply can’t figure it out.
