Change the Main Content Area, not Theme Background

I need help changing the main content area. When I try to change the background it changes the Background. I need to change the content area from grey to white. I want this to carry through for all of my site, not individual posts.

Also, I have icons saved and uploaded as PNG with transparent backgrounds, but this theme is showing a white background.

Suggestions to correct these issues?
